Themed fun to keep the family happy this May half-term

It’s half-term soon so take a look at all of these great activities and short stays in the UK:

Join Whitby Abbey as it delves into the world of classic writers such as Bram Stoker, Emily Bronte and Charles Dickens as part of English Heritage’s summer Telling Tales season exploring the myths, legends and folklore of England. Learn more about their literature in the very setting which inspired many of them, and if you ever dreamt of standing face to face with your favourite classic writers, this may very well be your chance. And if the little ones are feeling inspired why not enter our kids’ writing workshop?

Experience a contest to remember as rival knights demonstrate their archery prowess and swordsmanship. Brandishing blades and bows they’ll face each other in a test of strength and skill before the winner is crowned in the Grand Melee finale. Immerse yourself in medieval life in the encampment, where you can meet people from the Middle Ages, try on knight’s armour, and see the cooking and the weapon repairs which were part of life at camp. Budding warriors can join in with drills out on the field and even get a taste of medieval combat in the kids’ battle.

World War II Weekend, Dover Castle, Kent

Embrace the atmosphere and action of the 1940s as Dover Castle’s celebrated WWII Weekend returns for another Bank Holiday spectacular. This year, join the castle to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings with a brand new theatrical arena show. Witness a tense, action-packed battle between the allied and German forces and real-life vintage army vehicles. Then discover some of the tricks of espionage that were used in Dover in 1944 to deceive the German forces about plans for the landings.

Meet soldiers at military encampments from both sides of the conflict and get up close to a life-size replica Spitfire. Experience life on the Home Front and get a victory roll hairdo at the 1940s beauty parlour or relive the blitz spirit with a warming brew from an original Naafi wagon. Or pick up something a little stronger from the ‘Resistance’ bar while you set the kids off to play at hands-on activities including the sergeant’s assault course. Hear live music from the Swingtime Sweethearts and talk about fashion-on-rations with experts in all things vintage.

How to be a Roman Soldier, Chesters Roman Fort and Museum, Northumberland

This half term, join in the adventurous quest of our two Victorian time travellers who helped discover Chesters’ Roman remains and its ancient artefacts. Find out about the tools used to excavate, take part in activities to guess what the fragments from the past were used for and visit our museum to see Roman objects and original archaeology on display. Learn more about the artefacts which were unearthed by the likes of John Clayton and his team of archaeologists as our Victorian characters give exciting talks throughout the day.

Fly in to Warwick Castle for family fun, Warwickshire

Saturday 25 May-Sunday 2 June

Fly in to Warwick Castle this half-term for family fun and spectacular shows. The historic attraction brings medieval magic to life with its new birds of prey show, The Falconer’s Quest, joining the popular live-action jousting show Wars of the Roses Live which returns from 25 May until 2 June before its extended summer run.

Children’s imaginations soar as over 70 birds feature in The Falconer’s Quest, the biggest birds of prey show in the UK. Take a seat in the riverside arena and marvel at the majesty of the avian adventurers as they dart across the skies. Be awed at the size of Rosie, the Andean Condor – whose wing span reaches over 10ft! – as the story of Hobby’s medieval quest unfolds in front of and above the audience.

Head across the footbridge to watch the houses of York and Lancaster in the popular Wars of the Roses Live arena jousting show. Returning especially for a half-term holiday preview, with shows from 25 May to 2 June, select White or Red and cheer on as the two sides battle for the crown of England.

Learn sword skills with a knight or brave the Castle Dungeon where ghastly historic tales are told in a frightfully entertaining way! Enjoy the sunshine in 64 acres of landscaped gardens, or climb the 500 steps of Guy’s Tower on the Towers and Ramparts walk, with panoramic views of Warwick and beyond a reward for reaching the top.
