Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan shopping

Shopping in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan is a real treat, with an array of independent retailers flying the flag for locally-produced goods. With everything from food, drink, arts, crafts and designer clothing on offer, there is something to suit everyone and every budget. The oldest of the arcades is the Royal Arcade, built in 1858, its facade reflects the opulence of Victorian architecture. It isn’t possible to visit the Royal Arcade without taking a look at Wally’s Delicatessen. This fragrant gastro-emporium has been a Cardiff institution for more than 50 years. Step back into another world with a visit to the Cardiff Central Market, a handsome Victorian covered market that’s home to a delectably oddball selection of retailers. It’s great for a wander, and buying something is practically inevitable.

Penarth, too, has independent shops, such as Hamptons, which occupies two storeys of a converted Victorian meeting house, and sells a huge array of homewares and stages musical evenings. Shore, located on the Esplanade, is devoted to all things coastal, so that shoppers can bring a touch of the seaside back to the home. McArthur Glen Bridgend Designer Outlet lies 30 miles from Cardiff to the west of the Vale, just off the M4 and reachable by bus from Cardiff. This bargain shopper’s paradise offers up to 60 per cent discounts, with over 90 high street and designer brands such as Calvin Klein, Radley and Marks and Spencer.
