Visit the spectacular theatre in the centre of the historic Cotton Exchange and discover not only cutting-edge drama but a perfect place to dine and unwind.
Make a visit to the Royal Exchange Theatre, an essential part of your Manchester experience. Situated in the heart of the city, it’s the perfect place to escape the crowds. This former Cotton Exchange and Grade 2-listed building hosts a breathtaking glass and steel theatre, suspended from four central pillars in the centre, alongside world-class food and drink from its resident restaurant and bar THE RIVALS.
For over 40 years, the Royal Exchange has welcomed some of the greatest names in British theatre, film and television, from Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren and Pete Postlethwaite, to Brenda Blethyn, Cush Jumbo, Suranne Jones, Don Warrington and Maxine Peake. The work on stage is inspired by the world’s greatest stories: stories that have the power to change the way we see the world. Their Autumn Winter season features new productions of MACBETH, GYPSY and WUTHERING HEIGHTS, as well as the world premiere of LIGHT FALLS, with original music by Jarvis Cocker. In Spring 2020 their smash hit production of WEST SIDE STORY will return to the stage.
THE RIVALS bar and restaurant offers the very best in modern British food for both lunch and dinner, alongside an excellent wine list, real ale and craft beer. Situated at the end of the Great Hall, the relaxed restaurant and indoor beer garden allows you to enjoy your meal whilst surrounded by the amazing architecture of the building.
Head chef Anna Fysh has put together an incredible menu, which currently offers starters such as ricotta dumplings, smoky tomato choka and Padrón peppers, or warm maple glazed ham hock and apple salad with cider dressing. Choose from main courses such as stout-braised feather blade of beef, triple-cooked chips, kale and basil pesto (pictured above right), or baked salmon, horseradish and potato risotto, asparagus and pea shoots and herbs. Vegetarian dishes include pink fir potato and onion farinata, sherry-braised radicchio and walnut salsa, or spiced squash, braised in a coconut broth, sweet and sour slaw, and crispy mushrooms.
