5 to try – Oxfordshire shops

With an intriguing blend of tradition and avant-garde, Oxfordshire has plenty to offer and here are the best places to shop. Queen Street, just up from Oxford Castle, is where you will find chain stores such as Marks & Spencer, The White Company, Beaverbrooks the jeweller and Paperchase. Opening onto Queen Street is Westgate Oxford, which recently underwent a massive £500m revamp and now boasts more than 100 stores including John Lewis, 20 restaurants and cafes. Also accessed from Queen Street is the Clarendon Centre, a smaller indoor shopping mall with a mix of big name outlets selling clothes, shoes, jewellery such as Gap, H&M and The Body Shop. A few minutes away is the High Street – known locally as ‘The High’ – and home to some of the more upmarket boutiques such as Karen Millen, Coast, Reiss, Toast, Brora and Jigsaw. Make sure you pay a visit to Oxford’s Covered Market, as soon as you step inside, you will be bowled over by the delicious smells and colourful bustle and spot stalls selling almost everything from cheese, organic meat, sausages, fish to chocolates, cake and flowers.

102 High St, Oxford OX1 4BW

Brora is one of Britain’s best-loved and most successful modern cashmere and clothing brands. Since its beginning in 1993 Brora has steadily grown into a fully-fledged fashion label with its own distinctive viewpoint – wearable, subtle but highly individual, and mainly British-made. Scottish cashmere is still at Brora’s heart but every season founder, sole owner and creative director Victoria Stapleton – who gives the brand its guiding vision – and her design team, create an ever growing range of clothing to build a complete wardrobe around those beautiful colourful cashmere knits using only the finest fabrics such as tweed, silk and wool. However, Brora remains true to its quirky, slightly vintage-inspired self, while moving on each season with the turn of fashion’s wheel. Visit website
