The best independent shopping in Derbyshire

By Anna Melton

If you’re a shopaholic, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Derbyshire and the Peak District and here are some of the best quirky boutiques and independent shops the region has to offer.

Chesterfield

For independent shops, then it’s hard to beat Chesterfield. Located adjacent to the famous Chesterfield Market are a collection of narrow medieval streets which are known as the Shambles. Here you will find a range of independent shops including Adorn Jewellers, a beautiful independent jewellery boutique which currently holds the 2019 Chesterfield Retailer of the Year and Home and Gifts Retailer of the Year awards.

More independent shops can be found in The Yards, such as the hip and trendy Vanishing Point Records. It’s also home to cafes, making it the perfect destination for a mid-morning coffee or lunch. In The Yards you’ll also find a falcon and a puppy, installed as part of the Chesterfield Cultural Renaissance project. A great photo opportunity for a selfie!

The Peak District

Once you’ve shopped until you’ve dropped in the town centre, head out to the Peak District, along Chatsworth Road, the gateway to the National Park from Chesterfield. Chatsworth Road is a popular out-of-town shopping destination with a wealth of independent shops, restaurants and cafes to explore.

There are also many food and drink products on offer, from locally-brewed beer from Brampton Brewery and original Italian pasta sauces by Teresa Lambarelli’s to Northern Tea Merchants, a veritable emporium of a selection of teas and coffees from around the world; it’s even home to a tea room, the Pekoe Café, for a stop off ahead of your assault on the many shops the Peak District has to offer. If you’re just after something sweet,  have a selection of, well, rate good brownies!

Ashbourne & Buxton

To the west of the Peak District you’ll find the picturesque towns of Ashbourne and Buxton. A predominantly Georgian market town, the centre of Ashbourne features a medieval street pattern and historic buildings with a wealth of high-quality shops. Surrounded by popular cycling and walking routes, including the Tissington Trail, Ashbourne has a number of specialist outdoor clothing and climbing equipment shops.
