Take a step back in time and learn the history of nature and civilisations by visiting the Hancock Museum which contains collections that can be traced all the way back to 1780. Among the Museum’s permanent residents are a life-size cast of an African elephant, the Egyptian mummy Bakt-en-Hor, a full-size replica of a T-Rex skeleton and the beloved Sparkie – Newcastle’s famous talking budgie, who was stuffed after his death in 1962.

Officially opened on 14th October 1986 and celebrating a 35th birthday this month, this mecca for retail therapy offers an awesome mix of over 100 shops and a burgeoning dining scene that makes it an essential must do when visiting the region. Bring along the little ones and let them scale the towers in the indoor clip n climb or totally switch off from the outside world and get lost in a story on the big screen at Odeon Cinema.

A shrine for the faithful, St James’ Park is the home of Newcastle United Football Club. The city is electric on alternate Saturday’s, with over 52,000 Geordies meandering their way to the hallowed ground. Whether or not you’re a true supporter of football, the atmosphere that is generated from the fans will have you joining in with the chorus when you hear the Howay the Lads anthem echoing from every corner of the city.
