Galloway Forest Park

This includes some fantastic walking and mountain biking trails, the UK’s first Dark Sky Park, and an incredible Red Deer Range which will put you in touching distance of these magnificent creatures. Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura

Dumfries Museum promises a fascinating free day out for all. Watch out for fossilised animal footprints, caveman weapons, and Victorian household objects. Visit the world’s oldest working Camera Obscura on the top floor too, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Dumfries and the surrounding countryside.

Southerness Beach

Southerness Beach, Dumfries DG2 8AX

If you’re looking to relax while the little ones play, Southerness Beach is the answer. It’s sandy, beautiful and you can bring the whole family, even your four-legged friend! If you visit during low tide, you’ll find fun rock pools with all sorts of exciting creatures, and it’s a beautiful place too so make sure you take some snaps for Instagram.

Castle of St John

Learn how this castle, once a home, became a prison. It’s fascinating for the whole family, and there’s lots to do and see for children, including interactive games, dress up, and plenty of pictures explaining its history. As a bonus, the rooftop offers a wonderful panoramic view of the harbour!

With a free play park and interactive water feature, where children can run around dodging splashes and squirts, to the skatepark and attractive garden, there’s tons to do. And for a small fee, try the 18-hole putting green or rent one of the many boats.

Morton Castle

One of Dumfries’ hidden gems, the ruins of Morton Castle wouldn’t be out of place in any fairy tale. Built in the 11th century, this castle is the perfect place for a family stroll and a bit of daytime exploration. With few visitors, and surrounded by hills and a loch, it’s the perfect place for a quiet day out and a picnic.
