Hang out at the effortlessly cool Bristol Lido

Grade 2-listed, and the oldest heated outdoor swimming pool in Britain, Bristol Lido has good reason to feel proud of its heritage. Today it’s a positively chic hang-out, with a restaurant and spa giving it more the feel of a luxury hotel than your average council pool. It’s open daily year-round and is heated to 20-24 degrees.

Tooting Bec Lido, South London

Tooting Bec Lido is the largest swimming pool by surface area in the UK at, 100 yards long and 33 yards wide. The brightly-coloured changing room doors have made it a popular scene for fashion shoots and Brad Pitt’s boxing “pool” scene in Snatch was filmed there.

Chagford Swimming Pool, Devon

Situated within Dartmoor National Park, this river-fed pool is a good spot to cool off after a walk across the moors. It is also very state-of-the-art with solar pool covers which are rolled out each evening to maintain the temperature and kept there in the mornings. As a rule, most swims take place in the afternoons.

Bude Sea Pool is a partially man-made tidal swimming pool in the rocks at Summerleaze Beach in Bude, Cornwall. In 1930, The Thynne family put up half the money to create the pool and its sunbathing terraces, and the volume of the water in the pool depends on how much sand the sea has washed in.

Gourock Outdoor Pool, Inverclyde

Recently refurbished as part of a £1.8m renovation project, enjoy open air swimming in the salt water pool at Gourock, heated to 29 degrees and then get a feel for the summer on the terraced area or the traditional patio all with spectacular views of the Clyde Estuary.


New Cumnock Community Open Pool, Dumfries

Having been fully refurbished by the Dumfries House Trust in June 2017, this outdoor swimming pool, opposite the New Cumnock Town Hall, is ready for the community to enjoy.

Shap Swimming Pool, Cumbria

At just under 1,000 ft above sea level Shap Swimming Pool in the Lake District is reputedly the highest heated outdoor pool in the country. There’s a 20-metre pool and a small paddling pool for toddlers. The water is heated and the pool is run by volunteers.

Stonehaven Open Air Pool opened in 1934, is an olympic sized lido also offering a children’s paddling pool. The pool is filled with clean sea water and is heated to 29 degrees. There is a wide range of swimming and social activities.

Jubilee Pool, Penzance, Cornwall

Battered by storms in 2014, and following two years of closure and a £3 million restoration, the pearl of Penzance flung its doors open wide again in 2016. This spectacularly-sited lido down on the foreshore is the only one in Britain to be heated by geothermal energy and it’s open every day from late May until October.

Blackpill Lido, Swansea

This Swansea lido is right next to the promenade and has a paddling pool, picnic facilities and children’s play area. There is a car park opposite at Clyne and there is no entry fee.
