Stunning English countryside and chocolate box villages galore
This county is known for its lovely countryside and historic houses, but there’s much more to it than that. It will surprise you, impress you and fill you with inspiration – and it’s also the perfect base for a trip around South East England. The south of Buckinghamshire is right on London’s doorstep and is home to the towns of High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Marlow and Amersham. Further north is Aylesbury Vale with its enchanting villages, market towns and magnificent country houses, while dotted around our stunning countryside and villages is a wealth of charming country inns, many of which are destinations in themselves.
But it’s not all pretty surroundings and lovely vistas, impressive though they undoubtedly are. Buckinghamshire also has great modern shopping, eating out, arts and culture, and some of the best places to stay in the country. Many of its attractions are open all year round, so finding something to do, with or without children, is so easy. For families, children will be enchanted by Bekonscot Model Village. The Chiltern Hills are ripe for exploring, with endless footpaths rambling through beech-wood forests, often alongside spectacular waterways such as the River Thames and Grand Union Canal. And just as much fun can be had exploring the Chiltern Open Air Museum, while Waddesdon Manor is a must-see for lovers of fine art and architecture and gardens.
